Reading/Writing/Math

Phoenix KinderNest ‘s preschool curriculum uses a play and literature-based teaching model that follows the seasons of the year. Activities in this course use story-telling, cooking, art, play, and structured group activities to introduce little learners to letters, sounds, and pre-emergent reading and writing skills.   Students will develop letter recognition, phonetic awareness, number recognition, counting and improve their fine motor and writing skills.  Each child will have the opportunity to work at their own pace, and continue learning through whatever level best meets their needs. Learning activities are flexible and can be adapted up to a 1st grade level.

Social/Emotional Development

Developmental learning is perhaps the most important learning for children under 6 years of age.  Our curriculum places great emphasis on activities that inspire an understanding of feelings and foster empathy.  Lessons are also structured to provide opportunities for creative problem-solving, sharing responsibilities with others, and developing cognitive skills.  Throughout the year, our program draws attention to themes of loving kindness and appreciation for each person’s unique gifts, which will help children build their confidence and self-esteem.

Art/Creativity

Art engages children’s senses, supports brain development through open-ended play, and provides opportunities for social-emotional skill building.   Our curriculum’s exploration of different art forms and use of creative projects helps children learn multidimensional ways to process their experiences and express their feelings.  These skills are particularly useful during the early developmental years when ability to express oneself verbally is limited.

Technology

Studies have shown that screen time can negatively impact child development in several ways, including inhibiting the development of skills needed for healthy social interaction and empathetic awareness.  This can make it difficult for children growing up in our modern world where technological skills will likely be important for functioning in daily life as adults.  Teaching children how to use technology responsibly while they are young will help them develop the skills necessary to self-manage later on in life.  Phoenix KinderNest’s preschool and Pre-K programs provide 100% off-line learning during class, while making limited use of online educational assessment apps during centers.  This combination of primarily offline learning and play with periodic exposure to screen-time, helps children learn to appreciate the value of in-person relating, become accustomed to screentime being both limited and purpose-driven, and also provides useful assessment information regarding each child’s individual academic progress to teachers and parents.

Breath Warriors

Breathwork teaches individuals how to use intentional breathing to effect positive change on mind and body.  Children can use deep breathing to help them throughout the day, whether they’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious, need to relax or go to sleep, or even just to pause and reset when they are high energy.  Breath Warriors teaches various techniques through fun, guided breathing activities  that they can then learn to incorporate at home and in their daily lives.

Natural Explorers

Natural Explorers is a science exploration program that is intended to compliment the science units used in our preschool classes, however students do not have to participate in our preschool in order to benefit from these classes.  Students will learn about various animals and insects, their natural habitats, and will also learn about trees, plants, and the seasons of the year.  Each session will incorporate at least one hands-on learning experience or craft project related to that day’s lesson.

Creative Readers

When I was young, I used to love going to the local library and participating in their summer reading programs, and Creative Readers aims to emulate this experience for its participants!  Chidlren will be given the opportunity to listen to a wide variety of books, stories, and seasonal folktales, as well as participate in a story-related craft project.

Kinder Musicians

Did you know that preschoolers have a natural love of music, well so do I! My Kinder Musicians class uses music to boost language skills, confidence, social-emotional skills, and most importantly, is a whole lot of fun!  Students will have the opportunity to play instruments, learn the basics of rhythm, engage in group singing, and much more.
